Abdeselam Mimon
Abdeselam Mimon, 44, Spanish exclave of Melilla:
Abdeselam is Berber. His family is from Mount Gourougou, the mountain that can be seen to the south of Melilla. Where, nowadays, thousands of Africans wait in illegal camps to make it across the border to Melilla, to Europe. Abdeselam's family moved to Melilla three generations ago. More than 100 years ago his great-grandparents opened a textiles shop in the city centre, and it is still in business today. Abdeselam and his family are Spanish, they speak Spanish to each other, and they all have Spanish passports. His grandfather and uncle served in the Spanish army. At the age of 20, he decided to join the Guardia Civil. After several years of service in Girona and Granada, he moved back 14 years ago to be with his family. And now he stands at the border fence in Melilla defending the European border from the Africans spending their nights in the camps on Mount Gourougou, which had once been home to Abdeselam's forefathers.
