Vicentiu, Nicoletta, Albert and Raul Nastase

Vicentiu and Nicoletta Nastase, both 42, with sons Albert, 19, and Raul, 13, Galați:

They, too, are leaving. This is the last photograph of the family in their home country. In two days' time, the mother is going on ahead. She is an intensive care nurse and has found a job in England. Her son Albert will follow: he already has a place at university. The little one dreams of becoming a professional footballer. He'll go to a football academy in the U.K. As we discuss it, mother Nicoletta starts to feel a bit anxious. She is worried about leaving her family behind initially. But she isn't scared; she has come up against so many extreme situations as part of her job. At first she insists that she is only doing it for her children's future, but I later sense how pleased she is to be advancing professionally. It really is like a proper emigration. »When I was young, that didn't happen.« Her husband Vincentiu begins to cry when I ask him how he feels. It seems that the mother is the real driving force here. He is a car mechanic, but now works in Galați as a taxi driver and does not really know what the future holds. They have always done everything together. In the 20 years since their wedding, they have never been apart. His aim is to join them as soon as he can.
